Native American Spirituality

Becoming a Native American spiritualist is not going to be on of the “easiest” routes to take, but with some prayer, hard work, and years of training it is attainable for those with and without First…

Hey Yarrow, I'm in agreement that there are some parallels that cannot be drawn between some sects of Christianity and witchcraft...though there are many forms of witchcraft that use Christian saints, god, jesus, and mary in their practice. I think…

I think the fear of it in dominant culture in the USA comes from fear of its power, personally. BUT THATS A WHOLE OTHER THREAD. lol Sorry Oak, not trying to thread-jack.

About Me
I am an Oneida and Anishinaabe woman from Duluth, MN and originally from Minneapolis. I am Bear Clan which means I am a protector and a keeper of traditional medicines.

I am (or try to be) a very level-headed, laid-back kind of gal. I consider myself to be a sort of steward to the First Nations community and don't mind answering questions or educating others. I have a degree in teaching and I like to put it to good, every-day use!

I am a firm believer in all things woman. We are strong, beautiful, mysterious creatures with so much to offer and an amazing spiritual power. I feel so blessed to be female.

I have many passions in life: Music is a magic all its own. I write and perform spoken word poetry. I am an active member of the First Nations community. I live for my language. I have a wonderful lover who will become my husband in June, 2011. I live to learn, to dream, to understand.

I have gone through many spiritual evolutions in my life but this does not mean that any of the faces I've worn have been false. I stay true to who I am in the moment, and as I've aged experiences have seasoned and changed my needs. I will not remain stagnant. I will not stop searching, trying, or believing. I am VERY interested in witchcraft despite my Native spiritual background and hope to pursue more knowledge here in this community.

I'm ferociously loyal to my friends. I may have a civil manner about me but trust me when I say my tongue is sharp when it needs to be. I love my community and spirituality, and will defend those I love to the death.

Thanks to all those who read and I look forward to making new friends!

For the Women: Trusting Your Inner Voice

I sheepishly admit that one of my all-time favorite films is "Practical Magic", starring Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman. I've adored this movie since I was about 13 and to this day could sit down and watch it any day of the week. The tagline for this movie fits today's subject perfectly: "There's a little witch in every woman."

The Anishinaabe believe that females have a constant and powerful connection to the earth and therefore a psychic power not to be diminished. With this power a… Continue

30 Honest Posts (Stolen from Jennifer and NightShade)

1. Something you hate about yourself.
My temper. I am very quick to respond to things and sometimes don't think my responses through. I have a good mind, which in a bad situation can be applied to make others hurt in the worst of ways.

2. Something you love about yourself.
My adaptability, for lack of a better word. I never give up because I know I'll always make it through. I can be funny when the occasion calls for it, and deadly serious when it doesn't. I always make people feel comfortable… Continue

Spirit/Indian Names: What Are They and How Do You Get One?

Something that I see in a lot of places where Native American spirituality is discussed is the concept of an "Indian/Native American Name." The general belief seems to be that one simply chooses their name, either based upon what animals they like, what traits define them, or what just sounds cool (i.e. Strongheart, Running Eagle, Dancing Jaguar).

Though I cannot speak for other tribes, the process of receiving your Indian Name, or what we call your "Spirit Name" is much more complex and spirit… Continue

Can First Nations Spirituality Be Mixed With Other Belief Systems?

Let me begin this post by saying that there are many traditionalists whose immediate response would be
"NO." And while I tend to agree, I do think there are instances in which mixing of traditions and other beliefs could work...barring any spiritual discrepancies on either side.

I have many friends who practice another religion (some Christian, others Agnostic) who also attend my spiritual ceremonies each month. One particular friend of mine is Anishinaabe but is a devout member of a Christian… Continue
