The Neolithic Great Goddess - A Study in Modern Tradition
I found this article by Ronald Hutton addressing the concept of the "Great Goddess" who was supposed to have been worshiped throughout Europe prior to the coming of the evil, patriarchal Sky Gods. Although this idea has lost favor over the past decade and is no longer considered by scholars to be a likely scenario, we see it still amongst modern Pagans, particularly in the more feminist Traditions. I do very much like Hutton's work and I think he has contributed a lot of value to our understanding of the real history of both ancient and modern Paganism. I know a lot of people don't like him because he tends to gore their sacred cows, but I believe that we should be building our beliefs on real history and not on some fabrication that bears little resemblance to the truth.

I entirely agree. I almost feel like Hutton's books should be mandatory reading, quintessential to all Pagans.

In my own Trad "Triumph of the Moon" WAS required reading for my students studying for 2nd Degree. It isn't the easiest of books to get through, particularly if you're not used to reading academic texts. One of my students was the victim of the public school system in Tennessee, but she sat there at the table reading Hutton with a copy of the dictionary next to her to look up the words she wasn't familiar with. I had to give her credit for being willing to step waaaaay outside her comfort zone and finish the text.
