Here's a few books for you to look into: The wise woman's Herbal for the Childbearing Year, By Susan Weed...or just about any other by her, Gentle Birth Choices, By Barbara Harper RN CNM and the few titles you can find by Ina May Glaskin. I heard she has or is reprinting but all these can be found dirt cheap at www.abebooks.com

One of the things the doc's don't tell you is that the moment you walk through the hospital door, your chances are almost 1 in 3 (30%) that you will have a c section. Epidural may be one reason but another is the fetal monitor. That blasted thing strapped to your belly is the most unreliable piece of equiptment ever built. In most cases, what doctors call distress, midwives call a need to change position. Many a c section are the result of a false reading leading the docs to protect their butt by cutting. Every other developed country on the planet have c section rates that hover around 5%. Is it a coincidence that more babies are born without fetal monitoring and by midwives instead of doctors in those countries?

3 hours? That IS a speedy labor. My first labor was 10 hours long (from the time my water broke at home to the baby coming- I guess I probably had contractions for longer, but I didn't know I was in labor until my water broke).

With such a short labor you probably ought to prepare for a quick one this time around too- but If memory serves me, I think that third babies usually take a LITTLE longer than second ones (who knows why). Nevertheless, what I really came here to say was "howdy" and welcome to the group!

Thank you. And yes the 3hrs was a wow for me too. My first I was in labor 10hrs and only at 6cm when they had to do an emergency c-section. I was after that even MORE devoted to a natural vaginal birth. My doctor kept trying to convince me to have another c-section just scheduled and I didn't want to. He said I could try vaginal but since my first was c-section my chances of doing vaginal was only like 35%! Well, not only did I accomplish vaginal with Alyssa but it was also 100% natural all the way around and although it was painful I loved it. I FELT everything if that makes since. I KNEW the moment she was here because there was NOTHING in my body to keep me from the feeling. Even with the pain I just thought it was an amazing experience and honestly I can't wait to do it again, hopefully. Since having one c-section and one vaginal my doc says my chances are up to 80% for this one to be vaginal! So, if everything goes right he will be and I just hope I can get through it without the drugs. I think the epidural with my first is whaT CAUSED my c-section. It was my first so by 4cm I was begging for pain killers even though I didn't actually want them. Hence the reason for wanting tips on more or less pain management! So, thanks in advance for any tips, hints, advice you or anyone else can give me. Very stuck on this baby being 100% natural!!

First, welcome to the group Tonya and congrats on the pregnancy. I find it refreshing to meet a mom who realizes that even after a c section there is no reason not to attempt a vaginal birth. WOW @the 3hrs. lol. Megan and I are both mom's and I'm a lay midwife studying for my direct entry exam. I hope to get my CNM someday. I'm sure between the us we have a few tricks up out sleeves. Since your at 33 weeks, I'll take this as a kick in the butt to write up a discussion tonight after the kids get to bed about pain management. It will give you some time to practice. Thanks for joining, the group is still small but we have great ladies, and as RP stands for quality over quantity, that's just fine with me.

I am on my third pregnancy. I am 33 weeks. My first daughter, whom will be 5 this April 2011 was an emergency c-section. I was devastated by it I only wanted all natural childbirth. My second daughter, whom will be 2 next month Feb 2011, was completely natural. No drugs, no c-section, no nothing. I am hoping this one my first son can also be natural. Any tips on making sure its natural is greatly appreciated. My second daughter whom was natural happened so fast even if I wanted drugs there wouldn't have been time. I was only in labor for 3hrs and 26 min.

It is ok- this is my second pregnancy and (cross my fingers) my second natural childbirth in a few months. I am just glad to see a group big or small on the subject! I will be lurking around as the group *hopefully* grows and has more people to chat and share with!

Hi Megan, welcome. As I said to Anne, I've been having some health problems lately. I'm working on a History of Modern Midwifery to post here in between feeling dead and taking care of things at home. Please don't think I've abandoned the group. Just be patient please but feel free to post or ask questions. I'm giving myself the week to finish the post then we can discuss away.

Welcome Anne. I plan on getting more discussions started this week but my illness has kept me from getting it done. If you have any ideas or questions please feel free to post in the meantime.
