***If you are unfamiliar with High John Oil, please see THIS article before proceeding.

When making my High John Oil, first, I gathered my ingredients onto my altar.  Then I took "John," my High John root, out of his home on the altar. I, then, placed him by my materials so that he could "watch."  I took a moment to explain to John what I was going to do, and how this oil would be used to feed him among other things.

Then I took a white taper candle and lit it, holding it in the air, I imagined powerful, steady engergy pouring into the flame from all around.  Then, I used this candle to light my "Master Candle."  This oil feels very personal to me, and I wanted some of my "essence" to imbue it, through my Master Candle.

My Recipe::

Almond Oil Base - 6 oz.

High John the Conqueror Chips - Handful

Dragon's Blood Resin Powder - couple pinches

Frankincense Essential Oil - 10 drops

Cedar Chip - 1 Large

I added the High John chips, first, while telling John exactly what I was doing.  Then I let them just sit there for a few minutes, soaking up the oil and spreading their energy.

Then I added the Dragon's Blood resin, the Frankincense oil, and the cedar chip to the mix.  The Dragon's blood resin turned the oil a nice dark pink shade, and the cedar chip should continue to color it a bit over the next few days.  The whole time I kept talking to John.

When all was said and done, I let everything sit for about ten minutes, then I extinguished my Master Candle, and put John back in his home, assuring him that he would soon have the new oil we had made.

Now, my High John oil is sitting on my altar, where it will remain for the next week or so, while it *matures*.  Then it will be put to good use, often.

Oi. Grayson.

I want those eggs, too. :/

LOL Now, if my own roots can *finally* make it here, so I can start brewing my own... I steeped red sandalwood in oil, and it doesn't change the color one bit. It gave it a nice scent, though, so I'll use it for my own High John oil. I've added Dragon's Blood to it, too. Where are those roots? *pouts at snail mail*

WOW Gray!!  Those are some Epic High Johns!!!  And the oil looks GREAT!!  I'm glad it worked for you!!  I'm a tad jealous of your High John box. :P

Well, you were right Strata, the dragons blood did make my oil change colour. Using a pestle and mortar I ground up some resin then added some oil, to make a paste, this helped the colour spread into the main bottle of oil. It worked a treat!

Here it is, sitting next to my box containing my little gang of High John roots!

Shawn, now I see why I didn't know about that one... I live at the other end of the country! LOL

What we have here is this:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eastern_White_Cedar

Technically, it's not cedar. But that's what everybody calls it. It's very much used here, especially as a decorative tree, and for hedges - and we're no exception, I've got some flanking my front and garage door. It even made its way into a colloquial expression, the "cedar hedge syndrom", which refers to bottom-levelling.

*completely happy to have learned about the red cedar - thank you Shawn!*

Elise, how funny, I didn't realize that there was non-red cedar! lol  We both learned something!  I might have to experiment with Sandalwood.  I had never thought of that...

I adore Dragon's Blood!!  It's one of my favorites!

Elise,

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thuja_plicata

Western Red Cedar is a very very large tree... in fact I have pictuers of Strata standing inside of one, in a park here in BC (the center of some is hollow!)

Red Cedar and Yellow Cedar (Cyprus) are the two highest value trees here in terms of softwood lumber, for decorative purposes.  The native peoples where I live also have a very, very long history of using the tree for everything from totem poles, to cloth (the bark can be beaten, then woven into cloth.)
