Guided Meditation: Awakening the Body
Meditation is a wonderful tool for creating balance and relieving stress. It helps one get in tune with our inner selves and our internal energy. Meditation is not limited to a specific purpose. People can meditate on a word, a sound, and idea, and emotion, or simply one’s own breath. Daily meditaion has even been found to lower blood pressure! Wiccans can use it to strengthen our connection to our energy flow.
The following exercise is a guided meditation. Do this meditation when you have plenty of time (at least 30+ minutes), you don’t want to rush through it. It is best done with a partner. You just do listen and follow the direction as given to you by a friend. If you do not have a partner to work with, this CAN be done alone. Simply read the meditation several times until you have internalized its format. Don’t worry about memorizing it word for word, or you may distract yourself. Another Idea, is to use an audio recording to record yourself reading the meditation instruction, then play them back to yourself when you begin your meditation... just make you sure you leave enough time between the start of the recording and when you begin meditating to get comfortable! Before meditating, drink a glass of water and eat a light meal if you are hungry. Put on comfortable clothing that is non-restrictive. Yoga pants and a t-shirt or tank top are great, but whatever you feel most comfortable in will work. Before you start, put on your clothing and “feel” the room. If it is too cold, turn up the heat a bit, if it is too bright, close the shades and dim the lights. If you can hear a lot of distracting outside noise, then consider turning on a fan or other white noise. You want the room to be peaceful. You can light incense or candles, just try not to use anything overly scented that could distract you.
Sit on the floor in a comfortable upright position. You can sit on a pillow or cushion if you would like. You can be kneeling or cross-legged with your hands resting on your knees. Sit up straight with your chin slightly tucked. Relax your shoulders back and down.
Now your partner speaks (do not speak italics… go SLOWLY):
Gently close your eyes…
Breath in (wait 3 or 4 counts) Breath out…
Breath in through your nose … and out though your mouth
IN (1..2…3) OUT (1…2..3)
Feel your energy falling down.
Down through your head… pouring to your forehead, across your lips, down your throat
To your chest… into your belly… then to the base of your pelvis and spreading to your knees.
Feel it flowing down into the earth. As your energy soaks into the ground
feel your body rooting to the ground. (wait… 1-2-3-4-5-6)
Now, feel cool earth energy run up your roots. As it enters your knees feel electricity spark here.
Feel that energy tingle and grow. Visualize the energy forming a bright ball of lightning.
Next feel the electricity spark and your pelvis. (wait several counts between each part)
Feel the spark at your abdomen.
Feel it next at your chest.
Feel the tingling upon your lips, and an explosion of electrical energy at the back of your throat.
Feel another spark directly behind your forehead.
Finally… feel the current of energy move up… up… up
Above your head a few inches, feel a spark ignited there
Feel each electrical center tingling and pulsing warmly.
Push the energy out from these points around you, so that they create a bright ball of light
Inside it is warm and soft. Feel those energy centers become red hot, building strength.
With one great push explode energy outward from these points into your sphere.
Now relax… let each spark go dim… first above your head
Now forehead… throat… chest…. abdomen… pelvis… knees
Feel any remaining energy pool beneath you and soak into the earth
Feel the roots holding you to the ground gently lose their grip and release
Breath in…. and out…
Feel your eyelid flutter open, and you are done!
