Goldstone or 'sunstone' is a pretty good stone for runes, yeah. It's a form of jasper, which is exceptionally good for divination, and with the inherant solar properies of goldstone you have a nice, solid combination.
As for the Witch's Runes, I've never really looked into them. Their history is sketchy at best from what I understand, and I like to understand my medium. I definately suggest the Elder Futhark for beginners, regardless. If you feel you're moving beyond then, I would suggest Ogham or the Saxon Futhork as your next step. Both are very complex systems with a rich history, and they tend to feel the most comfortable for experienced rune readers. The Futhork also make very pretty runes.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY!! Blessings!!
