this thread is specifically for us to share our thoughts and feelings about the most commonly sited sources for rune spells, the havamal and sigdrifumal, as well as any other findings we wish to share in regards to rune magic seen in the eddas, sagas, or on artifacts. The idea is to discuss what we all think these charms might be, to compare and contrast ideas and to see if we can arrive at any kind of consensus. I will copy paste the pertinent lines from the aforementioned sources here to get things started.

be lacking these charms for a long time,
though it be good for you if you get them,

I know the eighteenth,
which I never teach
to maid or man's wife,
-- everything is better
when one person understands it,
it belongs at the ending of spells --
to none but she alone
who is wrapped in my arm
or is my sister.

So, the first three from the Sigdrifumal are given to us 6 names tyr, teiwaz, 7 marks nauthiz and 8 calls for an "onion" ie leek, meaning laguz.
beyond that many of the sigdrifumal verses call to mind verses from the havamal; sig 10- hav 153, sig 11-hav 146, sig 12-hav 152, sig 13-hav 158. Some have suggested that each rune spell must have at least three runes, I have never seen any rason why that should be the case. They may or may not all be just one rune but I think that a three-rune standard limits us. The question is, if you were making a galdr spell for each of the above listed concerns which runes might you use?
aww, I really appreciate the kind words but you do me too much honor. As a Druid, I consider it my mission to share knowledge and wisdom with the world, but it is not MY wisdom but the wisdom of the ancients you read here. The Havamal and Sigdrifumal have been around for a very long time. everyone interested in asatru or the runes should be intimately familiar with AT LEAST these two works because they are closest to the source. the icelandic, norwegian and anglo-saxon rune poems are essential to anyone doing rune casting for divination. every book out there is just writer interpretation of the aforementioned works. I started this group in hopes of motivating some of the members of this site to participate in serious research and to encourage sharing of our findings thus advancing the art as a whole. alas, that has yet to happen, for all the flack that I caught upon first joining this site and all the supposed "experts" who challenged everything i said i have yet to see anything of value come from any of them. sorry if i seem bitter but i have good reason, trust me. anyway, i am glad you find my posts to be of value and use to you and, please, if you have any questions at all feel free to ask. message me personally if you like, i will try and check in at least once daily just in case.
